New Artisanal Ice Cream Players

Two new local ice cream brands started sharing space with the other longtime commercial and artisanal players in the freezer. One inhibits the minimalism apparent in Japanese culture. The other hinges on health, apart from comfort, in their line of ice cream.

New artisanal ice cream brands

Kurimu

  • This brand is by couple Bryan and Maxine Kong.
  • The name is a catchy derivation from the Japanese word for ice cream, Aisukurīmu.
  • Driven by their love for the creamy frozen treat as well as Bryan’s search for a creative culinary outlet, the husband and wife tandem developed a recipe that churns an ice cream that’s very silky, with a rich mouthfeel, and true to the authentic Japanese flavor the variety suggests.
  • They launched the brand with a starting lineup of three—nori goma or black sesame paste, the seeds of which they roasted themselves; matcha using premium grade uji matcha; and shoyu caramel which beautifully marries soy sauce and caramel.Early this year, they added Kinako Vanilla, a clean-tasting variant; Chocolate, which has an apparent but not overwhelming cocoa flavor; and azuki or red beans.
  • They have a couple of brand collaborations too. There’s the kohi cream, which they worked on with Yardstick Coffee. It features the famous Golden Ticket coffee blend of the Makati cafe.
  • The most recent is a collaboration with Jacob’s Well Artisanal Food called chai latte. They fused Japanese barley tea and Indian spiced tea or masala chai.

Alt Scoops

  • Hygge Beverage Co. simply started out as a wholesaler of Oatly, a Swedish oat drink, here in the Philippines back in August 2020.
  • They were surprised by the people’s reception, not expecting even the non-vegans to stock up on cartons of it.
  • This prompted them to think of ways to address the demand for plant-based food options, which then led them to starting Alt Scoops.
  • Short for Alternative Scoops, the young brand skipped the cow to create an ice cream made with oat milk. It is 100% vegan.
  • “Among all plant-based milks, we find oat milk to be the creamiest and closest thing to dairy milk,” says owner Patricia Coronel. “We want people to be able to enjoy their ice cream without that guilty feeling after. Some people even say this ice cream is so good you won’t even realize it’s vegan.”
  • Apart from offering a healthier option for everybody’s indulgent pleasure, the brand also takes pride in the part they play on the environment, particularly in curbing climate change.
  • They currently have six variants—burnt caramel with roasted pecans, the flavor that put Alt Scoops on the map; strawberry made with Baguio La Trinidad strawberries; dark chocolate featuring award-winning Auro chocolate; choco hazelnut; and the recently released ones—cappuccino crunch and dark mocha.
