Philippine Food Exports in the Global Context

The Philippines has gotten most of its agricultural supplies from the United States. 21% of the market share, to be exact, followed by a distant 11% from the European Union. This is according to the information shared in the website of the US Department of Agriculture - Foreign Agricultural Service, dated 2019.

Our country was the tenth largest destination for American agricultural exports, totalling to $2.9 billion in 2019. A big bulk of this was spent on wheat and processed vegetables as well as dairy products.

In turn, we supply the US with a lot of our tropical fruits. They sit in the top roster of countries we export most of our mangoes, bananas, pineapples and coconuts to. While neighbouring countries like Malaysia enjoy our coffee and Japan, our tuna.

Pineapple

  • In Japan, they consume our pineapples on a stick.
  • In Germany and France, they eat our pineapples with cheese.

Tuna

  • In the United Arab Emirates, they use our canned tuna in their canapés.
  • In Japan, they enjoy our tuna as sashimi.
  • In the United Kingdom, they have our canned tuna as a sandwich filling.

Cacao

  • In Malaysia, they process a lot of our cacao beans.
  • In Germany, they use a lot of our cocoa butter.
  • In Vietnam, they enjoy our cocoa powder for their confectioneries.

Coffee

  • In Japan, they get a lot of our unroasted coffee beans.
  • In Saudi Arabia, they enjoy the taste of our roasted coffee.
  • In Canada, they hoard on our unroasted coffee too.

Coconut

  • In the US, they use our coconut to make their cakes.
  • In Germany, they like using our virgin coconut oil.
  • In Europe, they like our desiccated coconut for their macaroons and cereals.
